Choosing a pot for your artificial plant
A faux plant looks its best in a pot that suits its height and width. As a simple guide, choose a planter about a third the height of the plant — a 1.8m tree sits well in a planter around 55cm tall, while a small fern or succulent suits a 25–35cm pot or basket. Since artificial plants are relatively light, it helps to weight the base (a little sand, gravel or a few stones) so taller pieces stay stable, then finish the top with moss, bark or pebbles to hide the join. Most of our pots suit indoor and covered-outdoor spots such as verandahs, balconies and entryways; for fully exposed positions, choose our heavier cement and stone styles.
Styling tip: If you want to add some extra height to your plant or tree, prop it up inside the pot and the entire combo becomes taller. In some cases this also allows you to choose a smaller plant or tree to get the same height you want.
Our pot & planter materials
- Rattan, wicker & woven baskets — natural, relaxed and coastal. Includes our rattan hanging baskets, woven basket planters, lined baskets and rattan urns — a natural fit for trailing plants, ferns and casual styling.
- Cement, stone & chalk floor planters — substantial floor-standing pieces for larger trees and statement plants, indoors or in covered-outdoor spots.
- Zinc & metal — antique zinc, iron and hammered-aluminium planters for an industrial or classic look, including matched sets.
- Rustic terracotta — warm, Mediterranean tones that suit olives, topiaries and herbs.
- Ceramic & resin sets — clean, modern planters in white and neutral tones, mostly sold in coordinated sets of two.
- Urns & decorative pieces — petal and rattan urns for flowering plants and feature arrangements.
- Finishing touches — cast-iron pot feet (raise a planter for airflow and to protect floors) and decorative pot huggers.
Matched sets & styling
Plants of different heights look best in pots of matching style but varying height, which is why many of our planters come as sets of two or three. Group them in odd numbers, vary the heights, and keep the material consistent for a considered, styled finish. Pairing an artificial plant with the right pot can be the hardest part — so we’ve put together suggested plant-and-pot combinations to take the guesswork out. Need the greenery too?
