Why So Many Perth Homes Are Going Artificial
Perth's garden water rules aren't seasonal advice. They're enforced, and they've been permanent since 2010.
The Sprinkler Switch-off bans sprinkler use from 1 June to 31 August every year across Perth, Mandurah, and parts of the South West and Great Southern. Households and businesses alike, and it applies whether you're on scheme water or your own garden bore. Get caught on scheme water and it's a $100 fine — bore breaches are referred to the state regulator. Water Corporation inspectors are out seven days a week. Putting in a new lawn or garden means applying for a watering exemption first, and getting that wrong risks a fine of up to $500. Outside the switch-off period you water on your rostered days.

Indoors, the challenge is different but just as familiar. Reverse-cycle air conditioning running through a long Perth summer pulls the humidity out of a room, and the foliage people actually want — fiddle leaf figs, palms, monsteras — is exactly what suffers most. An artificial fiddle leaf looks the same in February as it did in November.

There's a reason live greenery is harder to get into Western Australia than most people realise.
WA enforces strict biosecurity laws through Quarantine WA. Plants and plant products that could carry a disease or become a pest may not be allowed into the state at all, and the department's own guidance warns that flower and foliage arrangements can be seized and destroyed at the border if they can't be readily identified or if they host a pest or disease.
Those rules exist for good reason — WA has kept out pests the eastern states live with — but they do make live greenery a genuine hassle to bring across.
